A RESOLUTION EXPRESSING SOLIDARITY WITH UNITED NATIONS SECRETARY GENERAL BAN KI MOON ON HIS APPEAL TO END VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN IN CONNECTION WITH THE CELEBRATION OF THE INTERNATIONAL HUMAN RIGHTS DAY ON DECEMBER 10, 2009
WHEREAS, the International Celebration of Human Rights Day 2009 focuses on “non-discrimination”;
WHEREAS, according to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights: “all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights”;
WHEREAS, last November 25, the whole nation vigilantly started its commemoration of the sixteen (16) days of campaign to end Violence against Women;
WHEREAS, according to the press release given by the United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki Moon: “Violence against women cannot be tolerated, in any form, in any context, in any circumstance, by any political leader or by any government”;
WHEREAS, violence against women are categorized in terms of Socio-Cultural, Economic, Verbal and Physical and Sexual and Psychological abuses;
WHEREAS, in the spirit of genuine solidarity to the appeal of the Secretary General Ban Ki Moon, the Local Government of Olongapo, together with its constituents, expresses solidarity to the whole nation in the campaign to end violence against women and would be vigilantly committed in uplifting women’s rights as one of the basic tenets of human rights ;
NOW, THEREFORE, on motion of City Councilor Sarah Lugerna Lipumano-Garcia, M.D., with the unanimous accord of the Members of the Sangguniang Panlungsod present;
RESOLVED AS IT HEREBY RESOLVED, by the Sangguniang Panlungsod in a session assembled to express solidarity, as it hereby expresses solidarity with United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki Moon on his appeal to end violence against women in connection with the Celebration of the International Human Rights Day on December 10, 2009
Let copies of this resolution be given to the United Nations in the Philippines and the Commission on Human Rights of Central Luzon.
