RESOLUTION NO. 205
(Series of 2006)

A RESOLUTION ADOPTING NOVEMBER 24-30, 2006
AS NATIONAL BOOK WEEK AND EVERY YEAR THEREAFTER

WHEREAS, Proclamation 109 designates the period November 24 to 30 as National Book Week;

WHEREAS, the Local Government Code mandates local government units to ensure and support among other things the preservation and enrichment of culture;

WHEREAS, the reading of good books or the printed page is one of the most effective methods of bringing enlightenment within the reach of the largest number of people, and or promoting the cause of popular culture with its tremendous social benefits;

WHEREAS, it is desirable that the task of arousing a widespread interest in the reading of good books be recognized highly as a patriotic duty as well as a privilege;

WHEREAS, the City of Olongapo celebrates Book Week from November 24-30, 2006 and includes the following suggested activities;

1. Announcement of National Book Week during the flag ceremony and message from the City Mayor;
2. Mounting of streamers and putting up of pylons to announce the event;
3. Story Telling;
4. Conduct of programs and convocations in the theme with invited speakers and attended by students/parents/teachers/community members and city government people;
5. Putting up of book exhibits and other displays to give importance to the occasion;
6. Holding of relevant contests like making cards about books, on-the-spot painting, film showing and reading-with-comprehension examinations; and
7. Visitation by teachers and school children to libraries and information centers.

NOW, THEREFORE, on motion of Councilor Marey Beth D. Marzan, with the unanimous accord of the Members of the Sangguniang Panlungsod present,

RESOLVED AS IT IS HEREBY RESOLVED, by the Sangguniang Panlungsod in session assembled to adopt, as it hereby adopts November 24-30, 2006 as National Book Week in Olongapo City and every year thereafter.

RESOLVED FURTHER, AS IT IS HEREBY FURTHER RESOLVED, let a copy of this resolution be furnished to the 17 barangays for their information and guidance.
