RESOLUTION NO. 211
(Series of 2006)

A RESOLUTION URGING CONCERNED GOVERNMENT AGENCIES TO PLACE A MARKER IN TAPPAN PARK AS A HISTORICAL SITE OF US NAVAL BASE TURN-OVER TO THE PHILIPPINE GOVERNMENT

WHEREAS, the American Government turned-over the US Naval Station to the Philippine Government on September 30, 1992 as a result of the Philippine Senate’s rejection of the Bases Treaty and the passage of Republic Act No. 7227 known as the “Bases Conversion and Development Act of 1992;

WHEREAS, this historical event that took place in Tappan Park, Subic Naval Base signaled a new beginning for the residents of Olongapo City who immediately started to volunteer in order to preserve and protect the facilities left by the Americans;

WHEREAS, on the 14th year celebration of the Volunteers’ Day, it is fitting that this memorable era in the history of Subic Bay Freeport be remembered with a marker and a simple ceremony;

NOW, THEREFORE, on motion of Councilor Edwin J. Piano, with the majority decision of the Members of the Sangguniang Panlungsod present;

RESOLVED, AS IT IS HEREBY RESOLVED, by the Sangguniang Panlungsod in session assembled, to urge, as it hereby urges concerned government agencies to place a marker in Tappan Park as a historical site of US. Naval Base turn-over to the Philippine Government.

RESOLVED FURTHER, AS IT IS HEREBY FURTHER RESOLVED, that copies of this Resolution be furnished to the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority, the National Historical Commission, Bagumbayan Volunteers of Olongapo, Office of Senator Richard J. Gordon and the Office of the President.
